Install VLC on CentOS 7.2

It’s pretty easy, but as I said before, I prefer to write things down. The IT world is changing so fast… Solution found on Centos Wiki. Of course before it I tried yum install vlc-player with the consequent resulting No package message.

Step 1: Install the nux-dextop repository

Run this command to install the nux-dextop repository.

yum -y install
http://li.nux.ro/download/
nux/dextop/el7/x86_64/nux-dextop-release-0-5.el7.nux.noarch.rpm

Step 2: Install the adobe repository

Run this command to install the adobe repository.

yum -y install
http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/
adobe-release/adobe-release-x86_64-1.0-1.noarch.rpm

The output is:

Installed:
 nux-dextop-release.noarch 0:0-5.el7.nux

Step 3: Install the packages

The flash plugin for Firefox:

yum install flash-plugin

Output:

Installed:
 flash-plugin.x86_64 0:27.0.0.159-release

The java plugin for Firefox:

yum install icedtea-web

And now the heavy stuff: Handbrake, VLC and smplayer.

yum install vlc smplayer ffmpeg HandBrake-{gui,cli}

The list of packages is not long, but the dependencies are.

Transaction Summary
=========================================
Install 5 Packages (+57 Dependent packages)

After that, it’s enough to log in as an user and type VLC to have the orange cone popping out. I don’t know about the codecs, but I will update this post if I have problems 😛
